Duration: 6.5 hours
PHECC has designed the First Aid Essentials Standard to offer appropriate training to individuals and groups who require a basic first aid skill set including cardiac first response.
Key statements:
The First Aid Essentials (FAE) standard is a suite of courses tailored to specific groupings to provide first aid education and skills to target specific areas of interest, within a one-day
programme (or 6.5 hours).
There are three distinct streams to the First Aid Essentials programme, all designed around course delivery in one day (6.5 hours teaching time) and including a core module of CFR Community.
The streams are:
• Basic First Aid – aimed at a general population but adaptable for specific groups.
• Paediatric First Aid – aimed at early years sector or general interest in first aid from e.g. parents/ guardians.
• Community First Responder – aimed at members of community first responders or voluntary organisation
First Aid Essentials Standard Rationale
The First Aider will possess the following general skills. The ability to:
• deal with life threatening or potentially life-threatening conditions in the pre-hospital environment until arrival of emergency medical services.
• provide First Aid Response for conditions not thought to be life-threatening but are necessary to prevent further harm before the emergency medical services arrive.
• provide pre-hospital First Aid Response in a wide range of environments including home, recreational and workplace settings
• display the requisite personal skills including composure, competence and selfconfidence while understanding their limitations.
